The Fully-funded International Fellowships is offered for a Ph.D. degree in Geography. This scholarship is provided by the University of Nottingham. The University of Nottingham is a public research university in Nottingham, United Kingdom. It was originated as University College Nottingham in 1881 and was approved a royal charter in 1948. The University of Nottingham belongs to the elite research-intensive Russell Group association.

The University of Nottingham traces its origins to both the founding of an adult education school in 1798, and the University Extension Lectures installed by the University of Cambridge in 1873 the first of their kind in the country. Though, the foundation of the university is generally regarded as being the founding of University College Nottingham, in 1881 as a college preparing students for examinations of the University of London.

Nottingham is a research-led institution, and two academics linked with the university were awarded Nobel Prizes in 2003. Clive Granger was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics. Much of the work on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was approved at Nottingham, work for which Sir Peter Mansfield received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2003. Nottingham remains a strong center for research into MRI. The university has contributed several other significant scientific advances. Frederick Kipping, Professor of Chemistry (1897–1936), made the discovery of silicone polymers at Nottingham.

The university was named Times Higher Education “University of the Year” in 2006, Times Higher Education “Entrepreneurial University of the Year” in 2008, and finished runner up in the 2010 Sunday Times “University of the Year”. In 2016–17, Nottingham was named ‘University of the Year’ for graduate employment by The Sunday Times. Nottingham is described by the Fulbright Commission as “one of the UK’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious universities”. In 2019, it ranked 126th among the universities around the world by SCImago Institutions Rankings.

At the start of the 2021–22 academic year, Patrick McKinney, Bishop of Nottingham, selected David Palmer for the position of Catholic Chaplain to the university. The university actively blocked his appointment based on his views on abortion and euthanasia.

This triggered mass international criticism, together with from Ann Furedi, a former chief executive of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service with strongly pro-choice views, who described the decision as “stupid” and stated, “I disagree with his views on abortion but as a Catholic priest he’s expressing a mainstream Catholic view. Universities can’t tell chaplains what religious beliefs to express”.

Nottingham has presented overseas campuses as part of a growth strategy. The first stage in this strategy was the establishment in 1999 of a campus in Semenyih, Selangor, Malaysia, a short distance from Kuala Lumpur. This was followed in 2004 by a campus in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China.

Worth of the Fully-funded International Fellowships

The studentship program will shield fees at the Home/EU rate (£4,625 for 2022/23) and offer a full-time yearly stipend similar to RCUK tariffs (presently £15,609).

International applications are welcome, but as the fee funding is capped at the Home rate, successful international applicants for the Fully-funded International Fellowships would be projected to fund the fee shortfall (international fees for 2022/23 are estimated at £26,500 for science and £20,000 for social science Ph.D. projects) to the suitable candidate.
